Programmes of Study: Physical Education at Key Stages 3 and 4

Curriculum Aims:
Learning and undertaking activities in physical education contribute to achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people to become:

The Importance of Physical Education

PE helps pupils become physically skilful, competent young people who make physical activity a central part of their lives both in and out of school.

A high quality PE curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in physical activity.

As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in a range of activities and understand why leading an active, healthy lifestyle is important. By discovering their aptitudes and preferences at school they are able to make informed choices about their involvement in, and commitment to, lifelong physical activity.

Physical Education contributes to pupils’ personal and social development. They learn how to work and perform as individuals, in groups and in teams,
developing their concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility.
They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences in PE they learn how to be effective in competitive and challenging situations.

Physical Education is a lot like life! To be successful you need to take part!

Junior Sports Leader Award

The Level One in Sports Leadership Course (Formerly the Junior JSLA)

The Sports Leaders Award Level One is one of four Sports Leaders awards and as such provides the ideal starting point for young people from 14 years who wish to begin developing their sports leadership skills.

If a young person is interested in coaching in any sport, this course will develop a range of generic skills, which they may wish to specialise with National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications later on.

The Level One award is a practical qualification in which candidates should demonstrate knowledge and understanding mainly through physical competence rather than written work.  They will need to know how to plan coaching sessions and evaluate these sessions on a written plan, however. The candidates will be assessed through observation.

This course is an opportunity for pupils to learn the roles and responsibilities of a good leader through acquiring organisational skills and communication skills; learning about the importance of health and fitness, fair play in sport, the role of the umpire/referee, as well as learning about opportunities in sport and recreation. This is done in a practical way working with teachers and sometimes with coaches from outside of school.

These skills are then put into practise by students leading their own peers, and possibly children from a younger age group. They may get the opportunity to go into the local primary schools to do some coaching and follow on by organising Sports Festivals.

Successful candidates will receive a nationally recognised certificate.

GCSE Results

GCSE Results 2007:

66% of pupils who took GCSE PE achieved a higher pass grade (A-C). This was better than our predicted score of 63%. Well done to Jordan Knox, Jake Nicholson and Connor Smith for obtaining a grade A.

75% of our pupils were above the national average at answering the questions on the theory paper.

14 of the pupils who took GCSE PE did better in PE than in their other subjects.
