To all parents:

The aim of the Government's new strategy, known as PESSYP - PE and Sports Strategy for Young People - is to increase opportunities for young people to take part in as much school sport as possible, and to raise levels of participation as far as possible.

As part of this strategy all schools have to offer 2 hours of curriculum PE, plus 1 hour of sport offered by the school each week, and in addition a further 2 hours of sport offered by a club that the school has links with. In effect it is a 2 + 1 + 2 offer, a 5 hour offer.

This is actually the Government's Public Service Agreement (PSA 22) in connection with the issue of health and physical activity for young people, and producing athletes from all sports who can compete with the best in the world. It states that 'In addition to at least 2 hours per week of high quality PE and Sport in school for all 5 - 16 year olds, all children and young people aged 5 - 19 will be offered opportunities to participate in a further 3 hours per week of sporting activities provided through schools, FE Colleges, clubs and community providers. This will create a sustainable legacy both in terms of future elite success and grassroots sport.'

With this in mind, at Hetton School we have an ever expanding list of sports for your child to participate in, both during school time as well as after school. I would ask you to encourage your child to take the opportunity and take part in as much as they can to get involved in school sports and physical activity clubs.

I would like to ask for your help and support in encoiuraging them to do so.

Programmes of Study: Physical Education at Key Stages 3 and 4

Curriculum Aims:
Learning and undertaking activities in physical education contribute to achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people to become:

The Importance of Physical Education

PE helps pupils become physically skilful, competent young people who make physical activity a central part of their lives both in and out of school.

A high quality PE curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in physical activity.

As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in a range of activities and understand why leading an active, healthy lifestyle is important. By discovering their aptitudes and preferences at school they are able to make informed choices about their involvement in, and commitment to, lifelong physical activity.

Physical Education contributes to pupils’ personal and social development. They learn how to work and perform as individuals, in groups and in teams,
developing their concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility.
They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences in PE they learn how to be effective in competitive and challenging situations.

Physical Education is a lot like life! To be successful you need to take part!

The following pupils have all achieved 100% attendance and participation in their PE lessons in the first term of 2010/11.

This is a wonderful achievement and something of which they really ought to be proud.  Attendance and participation really are the fundamentals in terms of success and achievement.  Well Done!

Let’s see who can maintain their 100% record for term 2!

Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and again Well Done!

Mr S Ferguson

Sports Day 2010

Neville House ‘Runs Away with the Cup’ !

Towards the end of the Summer Term at least 75% of our pupils took part in the annual two day Inter House Sports Competitions. All areas of the PE Department were buzzing with activity with pupils from all year groups taking part in activities such as Dodgeball, Cricket, Rounders, Hockey, Dance Mats and Triathlon. Everyone who took part fought competitively and with good humour to accumulate as many points for their House as possible.

During the second day of competition, where the traditional athletics type events are held, Neville House could simply not be prevented from achieving a resounding win in most events.

There were some outstanding individual performances, noticeably, from Connor Burdon in the 1500m race, which incidentally doubles up as the Gavin Pattison Memorial Event. Josh Peel achieved another outstanding performance in the Javelin, where he beat his own School Record from last year with an amazing throw of 37.05 metres.

Well Done to all who took part. Will manage to retain the Cup this year or will Bowes and Lambton Houses think that they can get their names engraved on the trophy?!

The year 7 and 8 boys have recently undertaken a session of judo, which they thoroughly enjoyed. A Judo club has now started at Hetton School in the gym on Friday’s, starting at 4pm till 5pm. All pupils are welcome to attend.

Mr Hardman’s year 7 Rugby team took part in the final Central League of the season and played some very good rugby. After completing 3 games they finished with a record of winning 1, drawing 1, and losing 1. It was a fantastic night and all the players cannot wait till next year for the league to start again.

The year 7 team have also been invited to Sunderland Ashbrooke Rugby Union training of the Easter holidays, where the squad will look to continue their development to make them stronger for next season.

Year 7 Skipping for Fun, Health and Fundraising!
At the end of last half term, the boys and girls from Year 7 took part in a Skipping Event as part of their Health Related Exercise Unit of Work. As well as reaping some of the main benefits of Skipping as a form of Cardivascular exercise, they also decided to do the activity as a fundraising event and get sponsored for their efforts. Appropriately the chosen charity was the British Heart Foundation.

I am sure that we have all heard of someone who has been affected by Heart Disease; it is still the biggest killer of people in the United Kingdom.
We all know that two of the most important ways to prevent heart disease are through eating and drinking sensibly and in moderation, and to exercise regularly - our Year 7 pupils can tell you all about this if you ask them!

Money raised by the BHF goes towards treating people who have been affected by heart disease, research into heart disease and equipment such as defibrillatot machines. A couple of years ago we were able to raise enough money to buy such a machine for Sunderland Hospital.
It is with an almost sense of disbelief that even in these hard economic times, when money is tight, people have managed to support the pupils and through their generosity we have managed to raise the staggering amount of £1200!
Four of our pupils, Jordan Munro, Emma Turnbull, Rachel Watson and Georgia Penny raised over £50 and will be rewarded with special prizes from the British Heart Foundation. Well Done!

Just to say a very big THANK YOU to all who sponsored the Year 7 pupils - your kindness and generosity is really appreciated!

Rugby Success:

In a recent match played against Monkwearmouth, the Year 10/11 Boys Team beat Monkwearmouth School 17-12. Lee Woods was named Man of the Match, but there were also outstanding performances from Kris Dent, Zac Waite, Harry Levison, John Parker and Lewis Smith. Well Done Team!

Rugby Coaching:

A reminder to all those who are interested in playing rugby that there is regular training every Monday evening, with sessions being taken by the Community Rugby Coach Matt Fieldhouse. Training starts straight after school for an hour.

Football:

The Year 10 football Team recently beat Houghton Kepier Sports College in the quarter final of the County Cup. This noe secures them a place in the semi final against Biddick Sports College.

GirlsFootball:

Year 8 girls, Rachel Petherick and Emma Lowther were selected to represent Sunderland in the Inter Association Tournament, which they went on to win. Congratulations Girls! The Year 9 girls team finished as runners up in the Sunderland schools Tournament. Danielle Clark and Katie Barrass from Year 10 have been selected to play for Sunderland in the Inter Association Tournament, another great achievement. Good Luck and Well Done Girls!

Hockey:

The Year 8 girls are proving to be just as successful in sport as the boys, with their first place position in the Sunderland Schools Hockey League.

As a result of this success they went on to represent the City of Sunderland in the Tyne and Wear Finals at Westgate Centre for Sport in Newcastle. There they finished a very credible second. Well Done to Sophie Barrass, Kelly Fenwick, Kelly Harrison, Becky Hissett, Sarah-Jayne Brownwsword, danni Slee, Bethany James and Rachel Petherick.

Hetton Tournament a Success!

On 19 May 2009, four primary schools visited Hetton School for a competitive football tournament. Hoping to achieve victory were-

The day started with a simple functioning warm-up that consisted of pulsing raising exercises and stretches from calf to hamstrings. Everyone who took part in the warm up contributed to an electric atmosphere before the games actually begun.  The warm up that was a great success, was managed by the team leaders that had been chosen by pupils working towards there “Junior Sports Leaders Award.”

The first matches started well with Hetton Lyons taking an early lead against their rivals Easington lane 2-1.  This was because of the early achievement of John Weirs who has played football since he was seven and currently plays for Houghton and Darlington. The final score in this match was 5-1 to Hetton Lyons. At the same time, Eppleton and South Hetton were struggling to score as this game ended with no goals scored, even though many of Eppleton’s players such as Aaron Calbot tried exceptionally hard to win the game.

As the afternoon progressed, there was a variety of scores and young talent emerging.
Some other results were:

The overall winners were South Hetton followed by last year’s winners Hetton Lyons. South Hetton took home the trophy and each player received a medal. All participants took home a certificate congratulating there efforts.

Awards for All Grant Success!

We were recently successful in obtaining a grant for £9,400 to support the delivery of the Five Hour Offer. Schools now have to take an active part in promoting not just curriculum and extra curriculum sport and physical activity, but they have to try to provide more opportunities for community sport using their facilities. So far we have used the money to purchase a new trampoline and start a community trampoline club. This runs every Wednesday evening for two hours. We have also extended the gym club to allow access to more pupils after school.

In addition the funding has supported a Soccer Stars Club, as well as Boxercise Coaching for the older girls.

Eleven of our pupils have recently completed the Level One Young Cricket Leaders Award.

This consisted of them attending six hours of training during their lunch time and lesson. The course took part in association with Durham County Cricket Board.

Hetton is the first secondary school in Sunderland to do this award as part of the Sports Leadership programme. The Young Sports Leaders have already delivered a series of cricket coaching sessions in the local partner primary schools as well as helping to organise the Primary Schools Cricket Festival at Hetton Lyons Cricket Club last June. This Award will further increase opportunities for those young people to follow a career in sport. Well Done!

The Year 10 Junior Sports Leaders will complete the above course in April next year.

The Level One in Sports Leadership Course (Formerly the Junior JSLA)

The Sports Leaders Award Level One is one of four Sports Leaders awards and as such provides the ideal starting point for young people from 14 years who wish to begin developing their sports leadership skills.

If a young person is interested in coaching in any sport, this course will develop a range of generic skills, which they may wish to specialise with National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications later on.

The Level One award is a practical qualification in which candidates should demonstrate knowledge and understanding mainly through physical competence rather than written work.  They will need to know how to plan coaching sessions and evaluate these sessions on a written plan, however. The candidates will be assessed through observation.

This course is an opportunity for pupils to learn the roles and responsibilities of a good leader through acquiring organisational skills and communication skills; learning about the importance of health and fitness, fair play in sport, the role of the umpire/referee, as well as learning about opportunities in sport and recreation. This is done in a practical way working with teachers and sometimes with coaches from outside of school.

These skills are then put into practise by students leading their own peers, and possibly children from a younger age group. They may get the opportunity to go into the local primary schools to do some coaching and follow on by organising Sports Festivals.

Successful candidates will receive a nationally recognised certificate.

Coalfields Cross Country Festival
On 15th March 2011, 12 pupils from each of ten primary schools in Hetton and Houghton took part in The Coalfields Cross Country Festival at Hetton Lyons Country Park. There were two races which were split into a boy’s and a girl’s races, six boys and six girls from each primary school which took part in the races. This was the 7th annual cross country festival at Hetton Lyons Country Park and was a great success like other festivals in the past. Our overall winners this year who took away the Coalfield Cross Country shield were Newbottle Primary School.

The fastest boy runner was called Brendan Straughan from St Michael’s who ran the track with a time of 5.59 minutes.
The fastest girl, and also the fastest overall runner, was Poppy Pattinson from Newbottle who ran the track with a time of 5.19 minutes.

It was an enjoyable afternoon for everyone who took part and although all of the runners were tired at the end of it we have had positive feedback from all schools.

Hetton School Year 8 Football team continued from their success in Year 7 by reaching the Final of the League Cup after an impressive win over Farrington School in the semi-final.

The final was played at Sunderland’s Academy of Light and was an enjoyable evening for staff, pupils and their families.  Unfortunately a single goal from Jai Young was not enough to win the game against a good Seaham side.

Everyone involved ought to be proud of their achievements and Mr Ferguson comments that he is looking forward to building on this success next season.

GCSE Results

Congratulations to all those Year 11 pupils who took a qualification in PE and Sport in the summer. A magnificent 100% pass rate was achieved in the BTEC First Certificate in Sport.

Those pupils who took GCSE PE as an additional qualification managed to obtain a very credible 68% A* - C grade, with a 100% obtaining A* - G.

A special mention must go to Philip Hatzikonstantionou and Lewis Hughes who both achieved an excellent A* grade.

Matthew Stephenson, Ryan Hepple, Katie Barrass and Antony Lowerson all achieved a grade A.

Well done to all for putting in the necessary hard work and effort. The PE Department would like to wish all much success in their chosen career.

Information

PE Kit at Hetton School

For Health and Safety reasons pupils present in a PE lesson must get changed into appropriate PE Kit.

All pupils who take part in PE at Hetton School are expected to wear the following kit:

Boys

Royal Rugby Jersey  - for outdoor wear
Royal Blue Sweatshirt – for outdoor wear
Royal Football Shorts - for outdoor wear
Royal Football Socks  - for outdoor wear
White Football Shorts – for indoor wear
White Polo Shirt – for indoor wear

Girls

Royal Football Shorts
Royal Football Socks
White Polo Shirt
Royal Blue Sweatshirt

The above kit can be ordered from the PE Department.

In addition to the above kit pupils are expected to wear appropriate and clean training shoes. Feet need sufficient support when doing physical activity. Fashion type training shoes are not deemed as safe and supportive.

If the weather is inclement it is at the discretion of the individual teacher if they allow pupils to wear tracksuit bottoms. If this is the case, then these must be dark blue in colour.

Our Policy on Your Child Bringing their PE Kit to Lessons during Injury and Illness

Our policy of including all students in Physical Education in some capacity regardless of injury/illness is in response to Government and Local Authority guidelines on INCLUSION. This means that all students must be included in Physical Education in some way. This might mean that they only do ‘warm up’ activities or ‘static’ skills practices. Other forms of inclusion are refereeing, scoring, analysing performances, helping groups by providing feedback on performance and ‘feeding’ the ball in a skills practice. Students are directed towards a task, which is suitable for their condition and does not compromise Health and Safety. Full kit is required for a range of educational and practical reasons. Students need to look and feel the part of the group, not stand out as a non-participant by not taking part and not wearing kit. This also reduces the potential risk of injury to themselves; it also reduces the risk of them feeling ‘anxious’ about returning to the group fully as they have not left it fully.

On a practical level, kit is required for refereeing, warming up and supporting and coaching. It is also helps students with ease of movement, weather conditions, hygiene and safety. If the class is going outside additional clothing may be worn if required. I am sure that you will lend your support to maintaining the high standards at Hetton School and work with us to ensure that your child gets the most out of their time here. I do realise how important it is for injuries to be allowed to heal. Rest assured that your child will not be asked to do any activity that will be contrary to Health and Safety regulations or medical advice.
