Well done to all the students who gained a certificate in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge 2011
What is the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge? : A national competition, which is, aimed at the top 35% of pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11.
The papers are 1 hour long and sat under examination conditions. The questions are multiple-choice with the twist that, for the later, harder questions, marks are deducted if you get the wrong answer. The papers are sent off to Leeds University to be marked. At Hetton School, we enter only our top sets from each year group.
These papers are hard and the pupils are to be congratulated for their achievements. It takes a special kind of lateral-thinking brain to gain a certificate and demonstrates a real ability in mathematics. Well done to you all!

BBC News School Report Day
This year Hetton School is taking part for the first time in BBC News School Report Day. Students from years 7-9 are given the opportunity to create news videos or write articles about what is happening in our local area. The students have met every Wednesday lunchtime planning their stories and have also had a talk from Nisha Joshi at BBC Radio Newcastle about how to write a good report.
Here are the student reports |

Newsletters
I hope that you will find it useful that I plan to write to parents toward the end of every half term in my newsletter so that you are able to stay informed and reminded about what is happening at school. A digital copy will also be available to download from the web site.

Hetton Headlines aims to bring you all the latest news and views from Hetton School. Our aim is to inform you, our school community, of what is happening at our school.
In this issue, you will read about our fundraising for charity – such as the collection of over 100 boxes to donate to Operation Christmas Child – as well as views from students; teacher interviews and what’s coming up in the school. I hope you find it both informative and entertaining.
I’d like to thank students; teachers and community members for their help in the production of the magazine and also extend a big thanks to parents for supporting school events such as charity fundraising and events such as The X Factor.

Year 7 Skipping to Raise Money for Heart Health!
Once again, as part of their Health Related Exercise Module in PE, all of the Year 7 pupils took part in a Skipping Event at the end of last half term. The reasons for doing this are two-fold. First of all, and perhaps most importantly, they learn about how important it is to look after their health by keeping active on a regular basis, and in particular their heart health – the most important muscle in the body! They learn about the kinds of activities that enable the Cardiovascular System to keep strong and healthy – that is any kind of continuous moderate type of exercise such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics and of course skipping!
Once again, the PE Department thought that it would be a good idea to incorporate this work with a Sponsored Skip in aid of the British Heart Foundation. The BHF does so much good work to try to promote and prevent heart disease in the UK through extensive research. Many of the lifesaving equipment we see around the medical centres and hospitals moreover, is actually funded by the British Heart Foundation, such as defibrillator machines.
The Year 7 pupils did not take long to rise to the challenge of trying to raise as much money as they could after completing their hour long skip and they have managed to collect in the amazing amount of £1862!
Can the generosity of the people of Hetton be beaten, particularly in these very uncertain economic times??
Twelve of the boys and girls raised over £50 and they will be receiving a ‘special’ reward from the British Heart Foundation for their efforts. They are: Olivia Wallace, Ewan Donaldson, Abigail Roberts, Chloe Mann, Lee Ellison, Cameron Logan, Katie Asquith, Owen Lynn, Keira Watson, Caitlin Forth, Layla Cairns and John Smith.
We would like to say a very big THANK YOU to all who sponsored the Year 7 pupils. Your kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity is hugely appreciated!
Year 11 Vocational Tasters
12 Year 11 pupils participated in a series of vocational taster courses at the City of Sunderland College. The pupils chose the courses they wanted to try and they could each choose upto 4 different courses and some gained a nationally recognised certificate at the end.
Sheffield University here we come!
37 Year 10 pupils from Sunderland (14 from Hetton School), along with others from City of Sunderland College travelled to Sheffield University to test the facilities and scrutinise its degree courses. The Sunderland crew took over The Ridge hall of residence and were pleasantly surprised to find well equipped kitchens, comfortable chill out areas, a high quality restaurant and cosy bedrooms with coffee making facilities. The crew split up to cover the various faculty areas. They visited areas as diverse as law and PE, art and physics, psychology and engineering. In all areas the facilities and provision were found to be outstanding with some students setting their sights on going to University.
Hetton School gets National Recognition with the Princess Dianna Award
A group of Hetton School pupils have worked over a long period of time to tackle bullying. As part of the long term project they produced a DVD which has gained National recognition and won the very prestigious Princess Diana Award. On behalf of the school, Daniel Alcock accepted the award from the Mayor of Sunderland. The presentation night was very successful with the Mayor of Hetton, Headteacher and staff from Hetton School and other members of the team who produced the DVD.
A Level Tasters
June saw 55 Year 10 pupils visit the City of Sunderland College and experience ‘A Level’ lessons. The students were able to choose 2 A Levels to taste and ask questions about the course and the career paths opened by those A Levels. The Students had a very enjoyable morning.
